Akita

The Akita is docile and very affectionate with its family. The Akita is intelligent, independent, courageous and fearless. It is the perfect blend of tough hunting dog and personal guard. Even as a puppy it is very willful and needs firm training as a puppy. The faithfulness and loyalty of the Akita is legendary in Japan.

THE COAT

The Akita has a think double coat that sheds twice a year. The coat is water-proof and is impenetrable to cold or wet weather. The American Akita is a very large dog that can weigh as much as 150 pounds. Any color for an Akita is permissible the most colorful and popular color patterns in America are pinto- a solid color and white.

THE PERSONALITY

The Akita is a first class guard dog. In the old days, Japanese mothers would allow the Akita to act like a dog nanny and watch over the children. They are extremely faithful and thrive on companionship. The Akita is very aggressive to other dogs and animals and should therefore never be allowed to run off its lead around other animals.

It should definitely be supervised with other household pets and children. Although the breed may tolerate and be good with children from his own family, he may not accept other children. If teased, Akita’s may bite. Children must be taught to treat these dogs with respect and compassion.

This breed can be very food-possessive and willful. They are capable of ferocity, but with firm training, can make a fine pet. Obedience training requires patience, as these dogs tend to get bored quickly.

There are many dog sports in which the Akita can excel-some win obedience titles, others shine in hunting activities and all Akitas adore winter sports such as sledding, skijoring and mushing. The Akita needs to be with its family. It vocalizes with many interesting sounds, but it is not an excessive barker.

THE BEST TYPE OF OWNER

This is not a dog for weak-willed people, permissive owners or people who are elderly, infirm or simply too busy to meet the psychological needs of this rare and unusual dog.
